Currently, after tons of fuzzy dead girls and a complete wipeout of all the rabbit snails with them, their sorority tank has been empty, for weeks. Then, fuzz-covered dead bettas start showing up. I should note right here and now that over a few years, I've seen the same thing happen to the large betta sorority at my LFS: At first, the fish seem happy and thriving. We also eventually moved the remaining loaches and cories to other tanks (the dither fish weren't species with long lifespans and had eventually passed) to house our baby Flowerhorn who was picking on our baby Oscar, temporarily. Columnaris? That seemed like a stretch, because only one species was affected, and they had a very peaceful life.Įventually, all my bettas died. API General Cure and Fungus Cure (applied thoroughly and at different times) had no effect. Newly found dead bettas in the floaters were completely cocooned in fuzz. All the other species seemed to be thriving.

Over time, I began noticing other signs, like a weird patch by the gills that almost looked like a bruise or the lips actually looking swollen/ like the top lip was shorter. The ones that died were often covered with some sort of "fuzz", and it seemed that fuzziness started on the eyes or lips. It was rare for any of the other fish to die. Some days, more, but it was always bettas. We see the occasional flaring and butt-butting, but actual bites are practically unheard of.) And some of the girls looked quite puffy/bloated, despite there being no increase of food and extra food on the bottom for the loaches and cories that the bettas were leaving untouched. But after a while, the first symptoms came: Some of the girls' fins were a bit raggedy, as if they'd been fighting. The girls simply didn't fight and, in fact, welcomed new additions. Besides a heater malfunction that got their water toasty enough to kill all the large tetras and no other species, all was well. I eventually moved the fish to a 36 gallon bowfront, and upped the number of girls to 13. All of those things seem to be the components that really make sororities work, and all was well. It was 8 or 9 females in a fully planted 29 gallon overstocked (and over filtered) community tank. I started my first betta sorority several years ago. Hi, all! I'm new, here, but presenting with a problem that I should warn you I don't have an answer to - but that seems to be a recurring, yet unanswerable - problem with betta sororities (at least as far as I can tell, and with no REAL answers on online forums where people have asked about it): Many of them collapse.
